Temporary Equipment Operator 2 (1 position)- Immediate to October 31st, 2008
The Town of Unity is accepting applications for this temporary full-time position. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, Equipment Operator 2 assists with operations, maintenance, repair and installation of water distribution, wastewater collection/treatment, solid waste and recycling, sewer and storm sewer systems. Assisting with treatment and sampling of water and sewer systems, operating heavy equipment, manual labour with hand tools such as picks and shovels. Duties will include the general maintenance of hydrants and repair or replacement. Customer service duties include dealing with customer/public complaints and requests for service.
Preference will be given to applicants with grade 12 or equivalent, valid standard first aid, CPR and WHIMIS certificates, a valid drivers license with a class 3 air preferred or willingness to acquire. The ability to operate front-end loaders, skid steer, grader and other heavy equipment. Class 1 Water Treatment or Water Distribution would be preferred. Must be willing and able to complete upgrading and further training, on-call rotations on weekend and holidays. Applications should be able to communicate effectively with the public and co-workers, to foster positive relationships and must be trainable, be in good physical condition, and able to operate equipment safely and effectively over extended periods of time. Related expereince in Public Works, Utilities and solid waste is an asset.
The incumbent will work 40 hours per week and overtime when needed. Wage is dependent on experience and CUPE Local #2752 contract.

Head Lifeguard- Immediate to August 30th, 2008
POSITION SUMMARY:
In accordance with the organizational chart of the Town, this position is deemed
non-permanent (seasonal) within the employ of the Town. Insofar as the position is included within the Collective Bargaining Agreement as negotiated with C.U.P.E. Local 2752, the position is classified as in scope.
This seasonal position involves the co-ordination of the day-to-day operation of the Town’s swimming pool and supervision of the pool staff. Hours of work may include day, evening and weekend shifts of eight hours.
POSITION REPORTS TO:
Director of Culture, Parks and Recreation
SALARY/WAGE:
In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To be responsible to the Director of Culture, Parks and Recreation and report to him/her on a regular basis.
2. To perform administrative and supervisory responsibilities as prescribed by the Director.
3. To assist in the programming of the pool so that the aquatic needs of all members of the community are met.
4. To schedule both the use of pool time and staff requirements.
5. To ensure the staff is aware of emergency procedures.
6. To assist in the implementation and actively maintain a quality staff in-service program.
7. To assist in the implementation and actively maintain a quality public relations service.
8. To be responsible for all pool related record keeping duties as required by the Town, Department of Public Health, the Canadian Red Cross Society and the Royal Life Saving Society.
9. To refer grievances in respect to pool employees and the public to the Director.
10. To prepare a year end evaluation of the pool operations, staff, programs and a list of recommendations for the following year.
11. To purchase supplies subject to prior approval from the Director.
12. To assist in the development, implementation and actively maintain a daily maintenance program.
13. To record accident reports and incident reports.
14. To keep an up-to-date inventory list.
15. To supervise programs and be a resource to all staff members.
16. To ensure pool policies and procedures are understood and adhered to by all staff members.
17. To ensure that staff are working together and maintaining a safe and enjoyable aquatic environment for our patrons and for ourselves.
18. To ensure that backwashes are being done.
19. To perform all the duties of a Lifeguard/Instructor as per the job description therefor.
20. To report instances of pool discipline in respect to pool employees to the Director.
21. To issue temporary suspensions of privileges to members of the public who choose to become non-disciplined.
22. To report all instances of public disciplinary measures to the Director within 24 hours of issuance.
23. To discipline pool staff employees, limited to the issuance of oral reprimands.
24. Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Director of Culture, Parks and Recreation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS:
- Grade 12 diploma.
- A valid Driver’s License.
- Possession of the following certificates:
Water Safety Instructor II, First Aid (Aquatic Emergency Care is recommended), National Lifeguard Service Award, C.P.R. (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), Pool Operators Course Level I and II.
- Teaching at all levels of Red Cross and Royal Lifesaving Courses.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Four to five years lifeguard experience.

This seasonal position involves the practice of safeguards as prescribed by regulation for the benefit of all pool users, in addition to providing skillful aquatic instruction all under the direction and supervision of the Head Lifeguard. Hours of work may include day, evening and weekend shifts as required.
POSITION REPORTS TO:
Director of Culture, Parks and Recreation
SALARY/WAGE:
In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To prevent the occurrence of accidents.
2. To be prepared to take remedial action in the eventuality of an accident.
3. To perform rescues and administer first aid treatment subject to the employee’s level of qualification whenever necessary; and to alert the Emergency medical Service (310-5000) based upon need.
4. To perform maintenance duties.
5. To enforce rules and regulations at all times.
6. To call the Head Lifeguard for assistance whenever necessary.
7. To be friendly, helpful and cheerful to all pool patrons and fellow employees in performance of duties.
8. To instruct lessons and coach clubs as requested by the Head Lifeguard.
9. To report hazards and unsafe conditions to the Head Lifeguard.
10. To maintain a professional appearance at all times.
11. To maintain a safe and enjoyable aquatic environment.
12. To maintain lesson statistics.
13. To acquire a knowledge with respect to handling cash and administering day-to-day receipts.
14. Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Director of Culture, Parks and Recreation and/or the Head Lifeguard.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS:
- Possession of the following certificates:
